Our take
Philips Hue is still the system to build around: the Zigbee bridge keeps dozens of lights responsive where Wi-Fi bulbs choke, the app and automations are the best in the business, and the accessory ecosystem is unmatched. It's the priciest way in and needs the bridge for the full experience, but for a whole-home setup nothing else comes close.
